Why we love Him:

He gave young cricketers inspiration.

Wood’s brilliance as a batsman influenced a generation of cricket players. His son Nathan’s decision to follow in his footsteps made this clear.

He refrained from bringing politics into cricket.

Professional athletes frequently become involved in drama inside their clubs and teams, but Wood had little interest in that. As the Derbyshire club’s captain, he ensured that the group’s primary focus was on the game rather than on personal connections. John Hampshire, a fellow player, once claimed that he joined the Derbyshire Club because it “wasn’t a political club” when Wood was captain.

He didn’t disparage rivals or teammates.

Unlike many athletes, Wood was never one to trash players on his own squad or those on rival ones. Wood has consistently shown admiration for former cricket players, recalling how his Lancashire squad was once “great” and even claiming that a few opposing bowlers belonged to “an era of stupendous pace-men.”
