Beechi Biography: BeeChi (1913-1980) was a prominent Kannada-language humorist. Rayasam Bheemasena Rao was his true name. He preferred writing his pseudonym name as tocchi in both languages. He was also known as the George Bernard Shaw of Karnataka.

Early Years
Beechi was born in 1913 in Harapanahalli, Davanagere district, in the Indian state of Karnataka. His mother was Bharatamma and his father was Srinivas Rao. After graduating from high school, he ceased his studies and joined a government office as a clerk. Beechi’s interest in Kannada literature was inspired by A. N. Krishna Rao’s novel Sandhyaraga, which she read on a lengthy train ride despite having no formal training in Kannada or its literature. He regarded A. N. Krishna Ro as his mentor.
Career
His first novel, Dasakoota, was published when he was 32 years old. Beechi’s writings were humorous. His primary character was Emma (30), which is used in Kannada to refer to a man who is considered to be foolish or insane. Beech published numerous publications with the word time in the title. In his lifetime, he composed approximately sixty novels at a prolific rate.
Umesh, the protagonist of the narrative, faces many obstacles in his life, including working for corrupt superiors and briefly serving in the Indian National Army (INA) under Subhas Chandra Bose (Netaji). When news of the assassination of Mohandas K. Gandhi arrives, rioters storm into Umesh’s home, believing he is celebrating the death of the Mahatma. The novel brought Beechi a great deal of fame, and his primary character/alter ego was time, a Kannada word for a SIMPLETON man. Beech wrote approximately sixty publications during his lifetime. P. Rajaratnam was met with controversy upon its release due to references to Omar Khayyam’s ‘Rubaiyat’ and how the famous Kannada poet G. P. Rajaratnam appeared to have been influenced by it. The book describes Beechi’s life in sufficient, but not agonising, detail, and its tone is one of tolerance, forgiveness, and understanding. Never is the humour in the book forced, awkward, or inappropriate. Beech is never resentful of his position in life, and the final paragraph of the book summarises his outlook on life.

Beechi was wed to Seetabai, and they had four children together. Beechi was well-known for his wit and passion for literature. He began his career as a humorist, contributing short stories and articles to numerous Kannada periodicals.
