Daryl Mitchell Biography: Late in 2019, Daryl Mitchell was added to the New Zealand Test squad to replace the injured Colin de Grandhomme. In his first innings against England, he scored an assured 73 and bowled with excellent control on a slow surface at his home ground, Hamilton. In February of that year, he made his international debut against India in a Twenty20 International.

Mitchell scored his first Test century in an innings victory over Pakistan in Christchurch at the start of 2021, and his first ODI century in March of that year. Mitchell’s unbeaten 72 against England in the T20I semi-finals at the 2021 World Cup in the UAE played a crucial role in New Zealand’s journey to the final in T20Is. Mitchell ended the summer on a high note, with two fifties and three hundreds, including 190 at Trent Bridge, despite New Zealand’s dismal performance in England in 2022, where they lost all three Tests.

Daryl Mitchell Career

At the conclusion of 2010, Daryl Mitchell, who was born in Badsey, less than 20 miles from New Road, became the first Worcestershire captain born within the county since Maurice Foster in 1925. After six years in command, he reluctantly resigned from a position he had cherished.

Captaincy was his defining moment. Worcestershire overcame a 37-point deficit to Glamorgan to win promotion to the Championship in 2010, with Mitchell scoring 1180 runs at an average of 42.14. The following year, they avoided relegation despite a small budget and a number of high-profile departures in recent years.

In 2012, they performed less well due to Mitchell’s significant decline in form. But in 2014, Mitchell was instrumental in returning his team to Division One. He scored over 1300 Championship runs, including five centuries, and was captain of the PCA’s team of the season. For the first time, there were also suggestions that he might be the man to add a bit of solidity at the summit of the England order. In 2015, life in Division One proved more difficult. Mitchell scored 832 runs, but more than half of them came in four innings, and Worcestershire were relegated despite a valiant effort. He did, however, guide them to their greatest T20 season prior to a home quarterfinal loss.

Worcestershire, unable to return to Division One of the Championship on their first attempt, appointed Joe Leach as his replacement after he served as captain for six years. Mitchell described the news as “devastating” and said it was the most difficult thing he had faced in his professional career, despite admitting that off-the-field issues had affected his leadership at times during the season and left him short of 1000 first-class runs in a disappointing campaign by his standards.

Devoid of the captaincy, he scored significantly once more, amassing seven centuries and more than 1200 runs to help Leach’s team win Division Two. He scored four more Championship centuries in 2018 but was unable to prevent Worcestershire’s relegation. A spot in Worcestershire’s victorious T20 Blast squad was a consolation.

Mitchell, a classical opening batsman and effective limited-overs medium-pace seamer, made his Worcestershire debut in 2005. It took until 2008 for him to establish himself as a regular member of the first team, but he repaid the club’s faith by scoring more than 900 runs as they won promotion to Division One from the Championship the following year.

He also acted as chairman of the PCA between 2017 and 2021 – not to everyone’s satisfaction as he adopted a passive response to controversial plans by the ECB to introduce a new competition, the Hundred, based on 100 deliveries per inning.
