FAMILY BACKGROUND
David Keith Lynch, who was born on January 20, 1946, lived with his parents, Donald Walton Lynch and Edwina ‘Sunny’ Lynch, in Missoula, Montana. His father worked for the United States Department of Agriculture, and his mother tutored English. He was raised Presbyterian. His family moved frequently when he was young, depending on where his father was assigned by the United States Department of Agriculture, but this did not hinder Lynch’s ability to make new friends. While he was still in school, he joined the Boy Scouts and achieved the highest rank, Eagle Scout. This allowed him to be among the boys who attended President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration at the White House when he was 15 years old.
At a young age, he was intrigued by painting and drawing and desired to pursue a career in that field. In 1964, he transferred from the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design in Washington, D.C. to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Later, he quit in order to travel Europe with a friend, Jack Fisk, in the hopes of studying with the Austrian Expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka. Because this did not occur, they returned to the United States. In the late 1960s, he began making films, and his first feature-length film, “Eraserhead,” was a hit on the Midnight Movie circuit. In succession, he produced “The Elephant Man” in 1980, “Dune” in 1984, and “Blue Velvet” in 1986. Lynch co-created “Twin Peaks” with Mark Frost in 1990, and the series ran for two seasons. His subsequent films, “Lost Highway,” “Mulholland Drive,” and “Inland Empire,” all employed the dream logic of nonlinear narrative structures as he delved deeper into surrealist filmmaking. In 2017, Lynch and Mark Frost worked together to create the third season of “Twin Peaks,” which this time aired on Showtime. In addition to reprising his role as Gordon Cole, he co-wrote and directed each episode.
He released three studio albums: “BlueBOB” in 2001, “Crazy Clown Time” in 2011 and “The Big Dream” in 2013. Additionally, he composed music for a number of his films. He has also done photography, painting, and literary work, as well as advertisements like the 2010 Dior film “Lady Blue Shangai.” As a fervent advocate of Transcendental Meditation, he established the David Lynch Foundation in 2005, which aims to grant the teaching of TM in schools and expand its reach to other at-risk demographics.
