Early Life

In the world of rock music, Gregg Allman, also known as Gregory LeNoir Allman, is a well-known character. The advances he made in the field prior to his passing always spring to mind when his name is brought up. Allman was born in Nashville, Tennessee, the second son of four children, to U.S.

Army soldier Willis Turner Allman and Geraldine Robbins Allman. Following Willis’s 1949 hitchhiker-related death in Virginia, Allman’s mother moved to Nashville with her sons and decided against getting married again. In an effort to better the family’s circumstances, she returned to school and enrolled Allman and his brother Duane.

Career

Two things happened that inspired Allman’s love of music. First, he went to a Nashville concert from the 1960s with his brother. Allman was enthralled with the concert performance and was inspired to compose music. The second was when he was taught how to play the guitar by a neighbor who was disabled. This inspired Allman so much that he started working as a poster boy to pay for his guitar. The Allman brothers saw a bright future in music and jumped into it after playing with the Y Teens.

They signed a record contract with Liberty Records in 1967 and began recording under the moniker HourGlass. 1968 saw the release of “Power of Love,” their second album. In 1969, the Allman Brothers Band broke from their contract with Liberty Records to form the now-famous band. The 1971 live album “At Fillmore East” marked a breakthrough for the Allman Brothers Band. After his brother passed away unexpectedly, Allman was devastated, but he soon got over it and recorded his solo album “Laid Back” in 1973, along with a number of other hit albums and singles.

Allman received multiple honors while he was a member of The Allman Brothers Band, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, the Billboard Touring Award, and the Grammy Award for “Best Rock Instrumental Performance.” He was admitted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2006 after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995.
