Humphrey Bogart Biography: Even decades after his death, Humphrey Bogart, who was born on December 25, 1899, was unquestionably one of Hollywood’s most well-known performers. For several years, he starred in small-budget films before landing the lead in “High Sierra.” Bogart did justice to his legendary role in “Casablanca” following his outstanding performance in the noir picture. Alongside such iconic women of the time as Ingrid Bergman, Katharine Hepburn, and Lauren Bacall, Bogart starred in films. Dedicated admirers of the classics still revere him, almost a century after his debut in a motion picture. Join us on his birthday as we honor his life!

Humphrey Bogart Biography:

Early Life

Humphrey Bogart was unquestionably one of the most well-known Hollywood actors to have ever graced the screen, and for good reason. He was born in New York City on December 25, 1899. Little Humphrey did indeed grow up in the lap of luxury—his mother was a successful artist and his father was a well-known surgeon. Despite having a wealthy upbringing, he joined the US Navy instead of completing his basic education. After a year of service, he departed from the navy. Due to his “old age,” he was turned down for reenlistment. Instead, he decided to enlist in the California Coast Guard Temporary Reserve.

Career

Before straying into acting and making appearances in a string of completely forgotten Broadway musicals, he tried his hand at more traditional trades. He primarily played members of society. After a fruitless couple of years in Hollywood, he finally achieved success on stage in 1935 when he was cast against type as mobster Duke Mantee in The Petrified Forest, a pretentious Depression-era drama by Robert Sherwood. Richard Yates’s novel Revolutionary Road opens with its heroine appearing in an amateur performance; it was the only play of note in which he appeared and is rarely performed. However, the movie version permanently returned him to Hollywood.

Under contract to studio head Jack Warner, Bogart appeared in several films a year, most of them passable, but few of them noteworthy, and usually as a rascal following his breakthrough performance as Duke Mantee. He did, however, star alongside Bette Davis as a strong district attorney in Marked Woman (1937), which is most known now due to Graham Greene’s misidentification of Bogart’s description of the Chicago crime scene as “feudal”. Although Bogart’s statement was deemed “futile,” Greene’s critique in The Spectator rested entirely on the similarities between medieval lords and US city politics.

Personal Life

When real success arrived in 1941, Bogart was in the midst of his third catastrophic marriage to an actress, Mayo Methot, who drank as much as he did but was not as good at holding it in. The first was the amiable criminal “Mad Dog” Roy Earle from High Sierra, then private eye Sam Spade from The Maltese Falcon. The following year, Casablanca gave him his most well-known role as anti-fascist activist Rick Blaine, who places duty above love and rejects accusations of idealism and patriotism. Casablanca defined the meeting point of Bogart’s off-screen persona and public persona and encapsulated the essence of the Second World War.

The reasons we adore Him

Bogart was an activist in politics.

In reaction to the development of fascism and communism throughout Europe in the late 1930s, the American government established the House Committee on Un-American Activities (H.C.U.A.). The committee singled out and threatened celebrities. As a liberal democrat for the entirety of his life, Bogart formed the Committee for the First Amendment in the late 1940s to challenge the unfair discrimination of the H.C.U.A.

He raised awareness of cancer.

He had smoked all of his life, and his esophageal cancer was the direct cause of his demise. His family’s estate charity used the disease’s imagery to generate money for cancer patients’ treatments and to increase public awareness of oral cancer.

He loved his pals.

Bogart treated his co-stars like family rather than just as fellow actors. He called his daughter Leslie Howard in honor of the actress since he treasured their friendship so much.

He had four marriages.

Actresses Helen Menken, Mary Philips, Mayo Methot, and Lauren Bacall were his spouses in chronological order.

He belonged to the Rat Pack.

Among the finest performers Bogart belonged to were actress Judy Garland and singer Frank Sinatra.
