Regarding South Korean entertainment, Lim Jae-Beom is a force to be reckoned with. Lim, who was born in Siheung, Gyeonggi province, on January 6, 1994, had aspirations of being a singer at a young age. In his third year of middle school, he and his friends began b-boying. His stage name was Defsoul from the song “Just Friends” by Musiq Soulchild. Both the musical composition and the hip-hop culture caught his curiosity. After hearing D’Angelo perform, his perspective on singing and songwriting shifted, and he began composing his own music.
The fact that he majored in film at Konkuk University explains why he was cast in “Dream High 2” as his first acting role in 2011, and then debuted as JJ Project with his partner Jinyoung in 2012 with an album. In 2013, he appeared in yet another drama, “When a Man Falls in Love,” just prior to his debut as a member of the seven-member boy band GOT7. In 2015, he starred in “Dream Knight” alongside his fellow GOT7 members. Later, in 2019, he and Yugyeom founded yet another subunit of GOT7 called Jus2. They also engaged in “Collaboration,” an art collection project for carbonated mineral water with the brand “Perrier.” This EP was titled “Focus.”
Jay B entered the fashion industry in 2019 after representing South Korea at the Saint Laurent 20SS Men’s Collection event. Later the same year, he teamed with Represent to launch the ‘JB Collection,’ a summer-themed clothing collection. After his contract with JYP Entertainment terminated in January 2021, he signed with H1ghr Music and debuted as a solo artist. Then, he adopted his current stage name, Jay B., and released his debut solo single, “Switch it Up,” which featured Sokodomo. It launched him onto larger charts such as the Gaon Download Chart, and once the R&B version was released, he became the first Korean soloist to appear on the Billboard R&B Digital Song Sales Chart and Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Digital Song Sales Chart.
Lim’s first solo EP, “SOMO: Fume,” was published both digitally and physically in August 2021. It opened the door for interviews, fan meetings, and photoshoots with major magazines like “Arena Homme.” In addition, he was able to produce products that sold out within days.
