Jermaine Jackson: Early Life
On December 11, 1954, Jermaine Jackson—the fourth of ten children—was born in Gary, Indiana, to Katherine and Joseph Jackson. His family had a strong musical heritage. While their father worked long shifts as a crane operator, Jackson, his brothers Tito and Jackie, and their mother Katherine harmonized while secretly performing their original songs on their father’s guitar.

In 1964, Jackson formed The Jackson Brothers with his two older brothers. By the end of 1965, Michael and Marlon, his younger brothers, had joined, forming The Jackson Five, with Michael taking the lead vocals. Big Boy, the group’s debut single, was made available on January 31, 1968. Jackson performed snippets of several of their songs, including “The Love You Save,” “I Want You Back,” and many more.
He spent more than six years performing with the group. Jackson made the decision to stay with Epic Records when the group decided to sign with them instead of Motown Records in 1975. In 1972, Jackson launched his solo career with the gold-certified song “Daddy’s Home,” while he was still a member of the group. When his self-titled debut album was released in 1972, it peaked at the top of the R&B charts in the United States. He put out 14 solo albums between that year and 2012, with multiple of them receiving gold certification.
For the album “Let’s Get Serious,” he received a 1980 Grammy nomination for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. In addition, he has produced multiple albums, some of which feature duets with Whitney Houston. The 1989 hit song “Don’t Take It Personal” marked his last chart success. Following a prosperous seven-year career as a solo artist, Jackson returned to the family band, now known as The Jacksons. He remained a member of the group until the 1989 release of “2300 Jackson Street,” which was their last album.
Jackson entered the “Celebrity Big Brother” U.K. house as the first housemate in 2007. He appeared in the second season of “Gone Country,” a C.M.T. reality show. During the top five Michael Jackson nights on “Australian Idol,” he served as a mentor and guest judge. In addition, he wrote the memoir “You Are Not Alone: Michael Through a Brother’s Eyes” and appeared on numerous other shows. Jackson has seven children and has been married and divorced three times.
