Joseph Smith Biography:

Early Life

Joseph Smith Jr. was an American religious leader who was born on December 23, 1805, in Vermont, U.S. His dreams made him famous all over the world. In 1820, Smith said he had a vision in which God and Jesus came to him. His family then moved from Vermont to western New York. In this vision, Jesus tells Smith that all churches in the present day have turned away from the truth.

Joseph Smith later wrote that in 1823, an angel named Moroni visited him and told him where to find a buried book with golden plates and other items on a hill near his home. Smith finally got those plates back in 1827, on his last trip to the hill after four years of failing. Smith says he was told to keep the plates secret from everyone but to translate and share the work. At the end of October that year, he and his wife, Emma Hale, moved to Harmony in Oakland.

Career

The plates were turned into writings that became the “Book of Mormon,” which came out in March 1830. Smith and the people who followed him officially started the Church of Christ in April. But he was caught before he could confirm the members who had just been baptized. Upon being found not guilty, he left for Colesville to avoid a mob. Soon after, when other church members who said they had revelations questioned his authority, Smith gave a revelation that made his place as prophet and apostle even stronger. This revelation said that he was the only one who could teach the church theology and scripture.

The Missouri Zion church changed its name to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1838, after Smith moved there. Non-Mormons in Gallatin tried to keep Mormons from voting in August of that year, which led to the 1838 Mormon War. For these crimes, Smith faced a military court trial and received the death penalty. He was charged with direct acts of treason and spent months in jail before getting away after a grand jury hearing in April 1839. By 1841, Smith had moved to Illinois and told his male friends about the concept of plural marriage.

This ideology was used as an excuse to seduce and attract many women, both married and single. Smith was charged with lying under oath and having multiple wives because of this.

Personal Life

Smith was a well-known religious leader with thousands of loyal followers. Because of this, his personal life was very public. He had other women, but his first wife, Hale, denied that he had any. Smith was put in jail in June 1844 for treason. But on June 27, 1844, an armed crowd shot and killed him.
