Judith Olivia Dench, the daughter of Eleanora Olive and Reginald Arthur Dench, was born in the Heworth neighborhood of York. She went to the all-girls Mount School, and the school had a big influence on her decision to convert to Quakerism. Her father was the resident physician at York Theatre, which allowed her to have intimate relationships with many of the actors.
Before developing an interest in theater, she spent some time honed her design skills at the York School of Art.
