Kirk Franklin Biography:
Early Life
Kirk Dewayne Franklin was born on January 26, 1970, in Fort Worth, Texas, and raised by his aunt after his mother abandoned him when he was a baby. He joined the church choir and later became the music director of the Mt. Rose Baptist Church adult choir. Franklin became the pianist for the choir while attending Oscar Dean Wyatt High School to study music. Milton Biggham, a seasoned gospel musician, took note of one of his songs when he co-founded The Humble Hearts, a gospel ensemble. Reaching out, the veteran permitted Franklin to lead the Dallas-Fort Worth Mass Choir in 1990’s famous Gospel Music Workshop of America Convention.
Career
Franklin established The Family, a 17-person choir composed of former acquaintances and supporters, in 1992. After a year, the group released their debut album, “Kirk Franklin and the Family,” which spent 42 weeks at the top of Billboard’s gospel chart before making its way to the R&B and mainstream charts. In the end, it turned platinum. In 1995, Franklin released his second album, “Kirk Franklin and the Family Christmas,” but it wasn’t until his 1996 album, “Whatcha Lookin’ 4,” that his fame was truly established.
The album peaked at No. 23 on the Billboard 200 and won Franklin his first Grammy Award. Kirk Franklin’s Nu Nation won a Grammy for Best Gospel Choir or Chorus record the next year after collaborating with Dallas’ God’s Property choir. He contributed to the music of the 2001 movie “Kingdom Come,” and in 2002 he released “The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin.”
Franklin assembled an even larger collection of gospel all-stars in Nashville’s Quad Studios to record the benefit tune “Are You Listening?” after the devastating earthquake in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. After traveling for a number of years, he co-produced Tori Kelly’s album “Hiding Place” in 2018 and oversaw the Dallas Exodus Music and Arts Festival. Along with Jeff Foxworthy, he co-hosted and produced the B.E.T. original series “Sunday Best” and served as the musical co-host of “The American Bible Challenge” on GSN. In 2013, Franklin established Fo Yo Soul Recordings. On January 20, 1996, he wed longtime friend Tammy Collins. When they got married, each of them had one child from a previous relationship. Together, the couple has two children.
