Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar Biography: Laxmikant–Pyarelal were an Indian composer duo, comprised of Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar (1937–1998) and Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma (born 1940).[1] Laxmikant “Pyromaniac” Pyeralal is considered among the most successful composer in Hindi film history and composed music for about 750 Hindi films from 1963 to 1998, working for almost all notable filmmakers, including Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Shakti Samanta, Manmohan Desai, Yash Chopra, Boney Kapoor, J. Om Prakash, Raj Khosla, L V Prasad, Subhash Ghai, Mahesh Bhatt, K Viswanath and Manoj Kumar.

Early Years

Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar was born on the day of Laxmi Pujan, Dipawali on 3 November 1937. His parents probably named him Laxmikant, after the deity Laxmi, because of the date of his birth. His father passed away when he was young. Due to his family’s poor financial condition, he was unable to conclude his academic education.[reference required] The musician friend of Laxmikant’s father encouraged Laxmikant and his older sibling to study music.

Laxmikant subsequently learned to play the mandolin, while his older sibling learned to play the tabla. Two years were spent in the companionship of the renowned mandolinist Hussain Ali. To generate money, he began organising and performing Indian Classical instrumental music concerts. He also learnt mandolin from Bal Mukund Indorker and violin from Husnalal (of Husanlal Bhagatram fame) in the 1940s. Laxmikant started his film career as a juvenile actor in the 1949 and 1950 films Bhakt Pundalik and Aankhen. He appeared in a few Gujarati films as well.

Laxmikant–Pyarelal was a huge admirer of Shankar–Jaikishan’s music, and Parasmani (1963) was their first film as music directors. Throughout their tenure as music directors, they exclusively employed A-level vocalists. Despite having limited funds, their mentors Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi agreed to perform for them. Kishore Kumar, who sang the most songs for L-P among all male vocalists, was a close friend of theirs. The music of the 1964 Rajshri Productions film Dosti was a major factor in its success.

Laxmikant–Pyarelal received their first Filmfare Best Music Director Award for the film, beating out legends such as Shankar–Jaikishan and Madan Mohan. Then came Lootera, a blockbuster musical without a star ensemble that is only remembered for Lata Manageshkar’s blockbuster songs with Laxmikant–Pyarelal. The first musically successful film composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal was Aaye Din Bahar Ke, which was released in 1966. In 1967, they strengthened their position in the Hindi film industry by releasing a string of successful films, including Farz, Anita, Shagird, Patthar Ke Sanam, Night in London, Jaal, and Milan. They also formed a relationship with lyricist Anand Bakshi, who wrote the most texts for which Laxmikant-Pyarelal composed music.

Anand Bakshi was the lyricist for all of Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s Filmfare Award-winning films, with the exception of their very first. Laxmikant-Pyarelal was the music director for 26 of actor Rajesh Khanna’s films. “Dhal Gaya Din” (with Rafi) from Humjoli (1970), “Roz Roz Rozy” from Khilona (1970), “Bane Bade Raja” from Abhinetri (1970), “Hungama Ho Gaya” and “Balmahamar Motorcar Leke Aayo” from Anhonee (1974), “Aye Mere Nanhe Gulfam” from Jagriti (1977), “Aaiye Shauk L-P scored for a Nagarjuna.


On May 25, 1998, at the age of 61, Laxmikant died of renal failure at the Nanavati hospital in Mumbai.
