Sunil Dutt Biography

Early years

Sunil Dutt, a Mohyal Brahmin by caste, was born in 1928 in the village of Khurd in the Jhelum District of Punjab, British India (since 1947 a part of Pakistan), and his family settled in the tiny village of Mandoli on the banks of the Yamuna in the Yamunanagar district of Haryana. Later, he relocated to Mumbai to pursue his goals. In Mumbai, he enrolled as an undergraduate at Jai Hind College and began working.

Career

Beginning his career in radio, Sunil Dutt was a wildly popular announcer on Radio Ceylon’s Hindi Service, the oldest radio station in South Asia. He transitioned to acting in Hindi films and made his film debut in the 1955 film Railway Platform. In the 1957 film Mother India, in which he co-starred with Nargis, whom he married on March 11, 1958, he rose to fame. In the film, Dutt portrayed Nargis’s short-tempered and furious son. During the production of this film, a fire occurred on the sets. It is believed that Dutt saved Nargis from the raging fire and thus won her affection.

He had one successful son, Sanjay Dutt, and two successful daughters, Priya Dutt and Namrata Dutt(Anju). His daughter Namrata married Kumar Gaurav, the son of Sunil Dutt’s close companion and Mother India co-star Rajendra Kumar.

Dutt was one of Bollywood’s biggest stars in the 1950s and 1960s, and he continued to feature in numerous successful films, such as Sadhna (1958), Sujata (1959), Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), Khandaan (1965), and Padosan (1967). In films such as Gumraah (1963), Waqt (1965), and Hamraaz (1967), his collaboration with B.R. Chopra proved to be fruitful.

In 1982, the Maharashtra government appointed him for one year to the position of Sheriff of Mumbai, an apolitical title position. In the 1980s, he frequently portrayed an elderly police officer or family patriarch at the centre of family feuds. After the release of Parampara (1992) and Kshatriya (1993), his final films, he left the film industry in the early 1990s to pursue a career in politics.

His political career was halted for several years in the early 1990s as he laboured to free his son from prison after he was arrested in the aftermath of Hindu-Muslim riots in Mumbai.

Family

Sunil Dutt is a member of a Punjabi family from the Pakistani district of Jhelum. When he was only five years old, his father, Diwan Raghunath Dutt, passed away. His mother Kulwantidevi Dutt raised him, his brother Som Dutt, and his sister Raj Rani Bali in India after moving there from Pakistan.

Personal Life

Sunil fell in love with the actress Nargis while filming ‘Mother India.’ It is believed that Sunil rescued Nargis from the fire that broke out on the ‘Mother India’ set. After this incident, Nargis developed feelings for Sunil. On 11 March 1958, following a one-year relationship, they tied the knot. Over time, Nargis gave birth to three children: Sanjay Dutt, a successful Bollywood actor, Priya Dutt, a former member of parliament, and Namrata Dutt, who is married to Kumar Gaurav, son of Hindi film actor Rajendra Kumar.

Death

In his sleep, he perished of a heart attack at his Bandra, Mumbai, residence. His seat in the House of Representatives was challenged by his daughter, Priya Dutt, who ultimately triumphed and is now a representative for North West Mumbai. His demise coincided with that of the renowned film producer Ismail Merchant, whose Merchant-Ivory productions were well-known.
