Early Life
Sarah Breedlove was born on December 23, 1867. She was better known as Madam C.J. Walker. Owen and Minerva Breedlove gave birth to her near Delta, Louisiana. She was an entrepreneur, a fighter, and a generous person. Walker had five siblings. She was the first of her siblings to be born free because she was born after the Emancipation Proclamation. Walker had no family when she was seven years old, so she went to Vicksburg, Mississippi, to live with her brother-in-law.
Career
Walker’s work path began when he got married. She married her first husband, Moses McWilliams, in 1882. Before he died in 1887, they had a daughter named Lelia. She married John Davis in 1894 but split up with him in 1903. she married her third husband, Charles Joseph Walker, and changed her name to Madam C.J. Walker. Walker had a lot of trouble with her hair before she started her business. Annie Malone was an entrepreneur who made hair care products for African Americans. In 1904, she became a commission agent for her. Walker began making her hair products in 1905 while she was working as a salesperson for Malone. She soon started going door-to-door to sell her goods.
She moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her family in 1908 and opened a beauty salon to teach people how to do hair curls. Walker moved her business to Indianapolis in 1910 and made it the home of Madam C.J. Walker’s Manufacturing Company. Between 1911 and 1919, she hired a lot of women to be her sales assistants. Walker had a lot of competitors, but her goods were all about making dry and brittle hair soft and luxurious. She had made more than a million dollars and became well-known for how well they worked.
Personal Life
Walker’s private life was known to many because she was a wealthy businesswoman. As was already said, she got married three times and changed her name to Madame C.J. Walker. She died of high blood pressure at her country home in Irvington-on-Hudson on May 25, 1919, when she was 51 years old. His only child was her daughter Lelia.
