Mark Chapman Career

Chapman was born to a Hong Kongese mother and a New Zealander father in Hong Kong. His father, Peter, was a crown prosecutor for the Hong Kong government, while his mother, Anne, worked in the financial industry. He attended Island School in Hong Kong before enrolling at King’s College, Auckland at the age of 14, and went on to study engineering at the University of Auckland. He represented Hong Kong’s under-19 team at the 2010 Under-19 World Cup when he was 15 years old.

Chapman made his World Cricket League debut for Hong Kong against the United States in Division Three in 2011 at the age of 16. He top-scored for Hong Kong with an unbeaten performance of 70 in the final of the 2011 ICC World Cricket League Division Three tournament as Hong Kong claimed the title after defeating Papua New Guinea. It also enabled Hong Kong earn a promotion to Division Two of the World Cricket League in 2011. Chapman made his List A debut versus Uganda during the latter tournament. The final of his five List A matches in the competition was against Papua New Guinea. In six matches, he scored a total of 192 runs at an average of 38.40, including two half-centuries and a maximum score of 81. His best performance was against the United Arab Emirates. Chapman made his first-class debut in the 2015–16 Plunket Shield on December 17, 2015. As a dual citizen of New Zealand and Hong Kong, he is not considered an international player.

Chapman achieved his first century in a Twenty20 match on January 1, 2018, while batting for Auckland against Canterbury in the 2017–18 Super Smash.

Chapman led all Ford Trophy run scorers in 2017–18 with 480 runs in eight matches for Auckland. He was awarded a contract with Auckland in June 2018 for the 2018–19 season. Chapman and Joe Carter scored centuries in both innings of a match in March 2020, during the fifth round of the 2019–20 Plunket Shield season. It was the first occasion in Plunket Shield history that two batsmen scored a century in each innings of the same match.

Auckland offered Chapman a contract in June 2020 ahead of the 2020–21 domestic cricket season. In the match between Auckland and Otago during the 2020–21 Plunket Shield season, Auckland’s Ben Lister became the first COVID-19 replacement in a cricket match as he replaced Mark Chapman, who reported feeling unwell, inline with the updated International Cricket Council (ICC) playing conditions for a substitute due to COVID.

International career

He was named to Hong Kong’s squad for the 2014 ICC World Twenty20, which marked Hong Kong’s debut in a significant ICC competition. He made his T20I debut for Hong Kong on March 16, 2014 against Nepal in Group A of the 2014 ICC T20 World Cup. In addition, he was named to the Hong Kong squad for the men’s cricket competition at the 2014 Asian Games. In the bronze medal match against Bangladesh, he led Hong Kong in scoring with 38 runs off 31 deliveries, but Hong Kong still lost by 27 runs.

Chapman was selected as vice-captain for Hong Kong’s two World Cricket League matches against the UAE in November 2015, both of which were ODIs.[1] In his ODI debut, he scored 124 runs not out off 116 balls, becoming the first Hong Kong player to achieve a century in an ODI. Chapman also became the first player from an associate nation to make a century on their ODI debut, and the second after Desmond Haynes to do so with a strike rate greater than 100.00.

He was designated Hong Kong’s vice-captain for the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 and 2016 Asia Cup Qualifier. During the 2016 Asia Cup Qualifier against Oman, he was controversially mankaded by Aamir Kaleem. He was also the first batsman to be mankaded in a Twenty20 International.] He was not selected in the Hong Kong squad for the 2018 Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament due to his commitments with the Auckland cricket team and instead developed ambitions to represent New Zealand in the future.

Chapman was appointed to the T20I squad for the Trans-Tasman tri-series against Australia and England in February 2018.On February 13, 2018, he made his T20I debut for New Zealand against England, becoming the sixth cricketer to play T20Is for two international teams. Chapman was added to the ODI squad as a replacement for the injured Kane Williamson. On February 28, 2018, Chapman made his ODI debut for New Zealand against England. This made him the eleventh cricketer to participate in ODIs for two international teams.

Champman was named to New Zealand’s squad for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in August 2021.

Mark Chapman is the first player with 50+ scores for two countries in T20Is. He has only two scores above fifty as of November 2021, and both are identical: 63* for Hong Kong against Oman in 2015 and 63 for New Zealand against India in 2021.

During the 2023 New Zealand tour of Pakistan, he was chosen for T20I series. In the fifth Twenty20 International, he scores an immaculate hundred of 104* to tie the series at 2-2, become the series’ leading scorer, and earn the series’ MVP award.
