Devon Conway Biography:  Conway is both an aggressive left-handed batsman who enjoyed batting at the top of the order in limited-overs cricket and a competent wicket-keeper. Born and brought up in South Africa, Conway made a transfer to New Zealand in 2017. With close to 100 First-class games and 70 List A games under his belt, Conway was already a household name in South Africa’s domestic circuit, and he hoped that the experience he acquired there would assist him in his new country. One of his greatest assets is his ability to adapt to various formats.

Conway joined the University Club and progressively began playing Super Smash for the Wellington Firebirds upon his arrival in New Zealand. First-choice goalkeeper Tom Blundell’s national call-up provided Conway with additional playing time, thereby strengthening his case. Subsequently, he represented Wellington in all three formats of New Zealand’s domestic season and has achieved a fair degree of success.

Conway made his New Zealand debut after becoming eligible to compete for the national team in August 2020. He debuted in the T20I format and was shortly included in all three formats. Conway made a magnificent 200 on his Test debut at Lord’s, announcing his presence on the grandest stage in style. He  is currently an indispensable member of the New Zealand team and one of their top batsmen.

Domestic Career

Conway began playing domestic cricket in South Africa. He was included in the Gauteng squad for the 2015 Africa T20 Cup in August 2015.He participated in all three Gauteng matches, scoring 53 runs.In August of 2017, at age 26, he relocated to New Zealand to pursue a career in cricket.

He was named Men’s Domestic Player of the Year at the annual New Zealand Cricket Awards in March 2019.In October of the 2019–20 Plunket Shield season, Conway scored an unblemished 327 against Canterbury for Wellington. It was the ninth triple century in New Zealand’s first-class cricket history.He finished the contest with 393 runs, the most runs scored in a single first-class match in New Zealand.Conway earned an unbeaten century off 49 balls on January 6, 2020, during the 2019–20 Super Smash tournament.He scored the most runs in the tournament with 543 in eleven contests.In addition, he was the leading run-scorer in the 2019–20 Ford Trophy season with 553 runs in ten matches and in the 2019–20 Plunket Shield season with 701 runs in six matches..

In February 2022, Chennai Super Kings purchased him at auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League tournament.He made seven appearances in 2022, scoring 252 runs at an average of 42 and setting a new Chennai record with Ruturaj Gaikwad for an opening wicket partnership of 182 runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad.In the 2023 IPL season, CSK would go on to win the championship by defeating the Gujarat Titans in the final, with Conway’s 47(25) in the chase earning him match MVP honors.He finished the 2023 IPL season with 672 runs and a strike rate of 139.7, ranking third.

International Career

He was named to the New Zealand A cricket team for practice matches against the touring West Indies team in November 2020. He was included in New Zealand’s Twenty20 International (T20I) squad for the series against the West Indies later that same month.

On November 27, 2020, he made his T20I debut for New Zealand against the West Indies. Conway was added to New Zealand’s Test squad in December 2020, replacing BJ Watling, who incurred a hamstring injury.

Conway was included in New Zealand’s One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against Bangladesh in March 2021.[40]On March 20, 2021, he made his ODI debut for New Zealand against Bangladesh. Conway achieved his first century in one-day international cricket on 26 March 2021, in the third match of the series against Bangladesh.

He was named to New Zealand’s Test squad in April 2021 for their series against England and for the final of the 2019–21 ICC World Test Championship. Conway made his Test debut for New Zealand against England on 2 June 2021.

Conway became the 12th New Zealand batsman to make a century on his Test debut, and the first visiting batsman to score a century at Lord’s since Sourav Ganguly.

Conway’s total of 200 was the highest by an English debutant male cricketer in a Test match. Conway also became the oldest batsman to make a double century on his Test debut at the age of 29 years and 329 days.

Conway was ruled out of the New Zealand squad for the tournament’s final after fracturing his hand against England in the semi-final.

Conway scored 92 runs in the first Test against Pakistan in December 2022, becoming the quickest New Zealand batter to reach 1000 runs in Tests in 19 innings.
