Mike Vitar Biography:

Early Life

Mike Vitar, whose real name is Michael Anthony Vitar, was born in Los Angeles, California, and has Latin ancestry. With two additional siblings, he is the youngest member of the family. In 1996, Pablo, his elder brother and the actor who portrayed an older Benny in “The Sandlot,” was promoted to sergeant in the Los Angeles police department. He passed away on January 29, 2008, from colon cancer. Elizabeth is Vitar’s elder sister as well. He received his diploma from La Cañada, California’s St. Francis High School in 1997.

He debuted as Arturo in Peter Maris’ action thriller “Diplomatic Immunity” in 1991. In addition, he made his screen debut as Anthony Gambuzza in the CBS family drama “Brooklyn Bridge” episode “Boys of Summer,” which followed a Jewish American family in Brooklyn during the 1950s. Alongside Peter Weller, he also acted in the 1993 neo-noir mystery film “Sunset Grill.” The film, which is set in Los Angeles, centers on a police officer who resigns and becomes a private investigator to unravel a mystery involving immigrants without papers from Mexico. The Sandlot (1993) followed immediately after.

Leading a cast of largely young performers, Vitar played the kind, kind, and gifted Benjamin Franklin “Benny the Jet” Rodriguez. The movie brought in $33 million at the box office and received favorable reviews from critics. The film’s cult following stems from its endearing characters and ageless tale of underdogs rising against tremendous adversity.

Although Vitar was not in the 1992 original “Mighty Ducks” movie, his performance in “The Sandlot” convinced the directors of “D2: The Mighty Ducks” to cast him as jersey number 22 Luis Mendoza. At the box office, the movie brought in $45.6 million despite receiving unfavorable reviews. He took on the role once more in 1996’s “D3: The Mighty Ducks,” the third installment in the series.

In the preceding twenty-one years, these movies have likewise gained cult status. He made brief cameos on CBS’s “Chicago Hope” (1997) and ABC’s “NYPD Blue” (1996) until he eventually announced his retirement from acting in 1997. Having worked at Gerber Ambulance in Torrance since 1996, he was able to gain expertise that helped him land his current position as a firefighter. In June 2002, he began working with the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Personal Life
