Cole is the daughter of the legendary jazz musician and singer Nat King Cole. Maria Hawkins Ellington, her mother, was also a singer. Cole began singing and performing at a young age. She attended Northfield School for Girls before enrolling at the University of Massachusetts, where she earned a degree in Child Psychology and a minor in German.
Soon after graduation in 1972, Cole began performing in small live music clubs with her band, Black Magic. In 1975, she recorded and released her debut album, “Inseparable,” under Capitol Records. The album was an instant hit and earned her the Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for ‘This Will Be,’ which also topped the R&B charts. Cole’s third and fourth albums, “Unpredictable” and “Thankful,” were both released in 1977 and certified platinum. She was the first woman to have two platinum-certified albums in the same year. In April 2012, she appeared on Pennington Great Performers alongside the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra. She passed away in a Los Angeles hospital due to congestive heart failure. Cole has been married thrice in her lifetime.
