Early Life
Michel de Nostredame was a famous French astrologer, doctor, and seer who was born in December 1503. He is best known for his book “Les Prophéties,” which was published in 1555 and is made up of 942 poetic quatrains that are said to predict what will happen in the future. Before Nostradamus was born, his father’s family was Jewish, but they became Catholic a generation before he was born.
Career
Nostradamus was a French astrologer and doctor who was born on December 14, 1503, in Saint-Rémy, France and died on July 1, 1566, in Salon. He was the most widely read seer of the Renaissance.
Sometime in the 1530s, Nostradamus started working as a doctor in Agen, even though he had never taken a medical degree and had been kicked out of medical school. During the plague outbreaks in Aix and Lyon in 1546 and 1547, he became famous for the new ways he treated people. In 1544, he went to Salon. He started to make predictions around 1547, and in 1555, he put them in a book called Centuries. The piece was made up of hundreds of rhymed quatrains, with each group of 100 being called a century. Astrology was at its height at the time. In 1558, a larger second version dedicated to the French king came out.
Some of his predictions seemed to come true, and he became so well-known that Catherine de Médicis, queen consort of Henry II of France, asked him to her court to do horoscopes for her children. Charles IX appointed him a doctor-in-ordinary in 1564.
The Congregation of the Index, which is the Roman Catholic Church’s body for examining books and papers, has never criticized any of the numerous essays about Nostradamus’ prophecies, so they are untrue. The predictions continued to cause a lot of debate because they were written and said in a very mysterious way.
Followers think some of them have predicted actual events that happened after Nostradamus’s time, like parts of the French Revolution in the 18th century. Some people say that others, which don’t seem to mean anything, can predict things that haven’t happened yet.
Academics don’t believe that Nostradamus really had supernatural prophetic powers. They say that the links people have made between Nostradamus’ quatrains and real-life events are just wrong interpretations or translations. These same scholars also say that Nostradamus’ predictions are very vague, which means they could be used for almost anything and can’t be used to figure out if the author really did have prophetic powers.
