Early Life
The head of the Catholic Church and Bishop of Rome, Pope Francis, was born in the Buenos Aires neighborhood of Flores to Mario José Bergoglio, an Italian immigrant accountant, and Regina María Sívori, a housewife. Bergoglio attended Escuela Técnica Industrial N° 27 Hipólito Yrigoyen, a technical secondary school, after completing his junior year of education. There, he earned a diploma as a chemical technician. Later, he worked as a bar bouncer, janitor, and floor sweeper in the food section of Hickethier-Bachmann Laboratory.
Career
In 1958, after completing his studies at the Inmaculada Concepción Seminary, an archdiocesan seminary located in Villa Devoto, Buenos Aires, Bergoglio became a novice member of the Society of Jesus. He was consecrated as a Catholic priest in 1969 and served as Argentina’s Jesuit provincial superior from 1973 to 1979. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in 2013, a papal conclave chose Jorge Bergoglio to become Pope Francis.
In addition, he has received honors and awards for some causes, including Person of the Year from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the Pope Francis Center for the Poor, and a canter in the Philippines bearing his name.
