Ranjan Mathai Biography: Ranjan Mathai (born in 1952) is a former Indian Foreign Secretary and Indian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom. He is a member of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) cadre.[1] Prior to this, he served as India’s Foreign Secretary from August 1, 2011 to July 31, 2013.

Early life
Ranjan Mathai was born in Thiruvalla, Kerala, India. He earned his Master’s degree in Political Science from the University of Pune. His father, Thomas Mathai, was a member of the National Defence Academy’s senior faculty. His mother, Sara, taught in Khadakvasla, Pune.

Ranjan Mathai is an Indian Foreign Service Officer from the class of 1974. Former Indian foreign secretary Ranjan Mathai became India’s next high commissioner to the United Kingdom on Monday, 9 December 2013. He replaces Jaimini Bhagwati, who recently retired. Before assuming this position, he was India’s foreign minister. On 31 July 2013, he resigned and Sujatha Singh assumed his position as Foreign Secretary.
After completing his postgraduate studies in Political Science at the University of Poona, he entered the IFS. He previously worked at the Indian embassies in Vienna, Colombo, Washington, Tehran, and Brussels.
