Sheila E. Biography: Sheila Cecilia Escovedo was born in the United States on December 12, 1957, and is best known for her stage name Sheila E. Often called “The Queen of Percussion,” she began her career with The George Duke Band in the mid-1970s as a vocalist and percussionist. After leaving the band in 1983, she embarked on a successful solo career, beginning with her highly acclaimed debut album, which included the song “The Glamorous Life,” which would come to define her career. Join us in celebrating this special day for her!

Sheila E.: Early Life

Pete Escovedo, a percussionist, and Juanita Gardere are the parents of Sheila Cecilia Escovedo, who was born in Oakland, California. Her mother is of Creole-French/African descent, while her father is of Mexican-American descent. “Yesterday’s Dream,” Escovedo’s 1976 recording debut, was done with jazz bassist Alphonso Johnson.

By the time she was in her early 20s, she had already performed on stage with Diana Ross, Herbie Hancock, Marvin Gaye, George Duke, and Lionel Richie. In 1977, she became a member of The Duke Band. She was featured on the albums “Don’t Let Go” (1978), “Follow the Rainbow” (1979), “Master of the Game” (1979), and “A Brazilian Love Affair” (1980). In 1978, Pete and Sheila Escovedo—Escovedo and her father—collaborated to record the song “Happy Together” for Fantasy Records.

In 1980, she made a significant appearance on the Herbie Hancock album “Monster.” She played drums for Marvin Gaye during his 1983 “Midnight Love Tour,” his last tour.

Sheila E.: Career

Prince Rogers Nelson happened to be present in 1977 when Escovedo and her father were performing at a concert. They would eventually collaborate on the “Purple Rain” recording sessions. Even though she was learning from Nelson, she demonstrated her own artistic talent. In June 1984, she released her debut album, “The Glamorous Life.” The lead single from the album, “The Glamorous Life,” peaked at number seven on the Hot 100 chart and spent two weeks at the top of the dance charts in August 1984.

The music video for the song received three nominations for MTV Awards: Best Female Video, Best New Artist, and Best Choreography. She also received nominations for two Grammy Awards: Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best New Artist. In 1985, she released “Romance 1600.” “A Love Bizarre,” the second single off the album, became her anthem and peaked at number 11 on the Hot 100 in addition to topping the dance charts.

Subsequently, she toured with the band from 1987 to 1989 as Prince’s drummer and musical director. In July 1987, she made her debut.

Escovedo collaborated with Peter Michael on her 1991 album “Sex Cymbal.”  She took part in a couple of recording sessions in the years that followed before becoming a member of the touring band of Namie Amuro in 1996. In 1998, she was the bandleader and sidekick of Magic Johnson on his ill-fated syndicated chat show “The Magic Hour.”

In 2000, she resumed recording with “Writes of Passage,” the first of two albums for Concord Records. Throughout the 2000s, Escovedo gave frequent live and studio performances. She co-founded Chronicles of Every Diva (C.O.E.D.) in 2006 with Rhonda Smith, Kat Dyson, and Cassandra O’Neal. C.O.E.D. went on tour and made their album available on the internet.

Originally only available in the United Kingdom, it went global in 2014. Three years later, she returned with a new album titled “Iconic: Message 4 America,” which featured cameos from Candy Dulfer, George Clinton, and Ringo Starr.
