She rose to prominence with the 2010 Marathi blockbuster Natrang, particularly for her lavani dance composition “Apsara Aali” in the film, for which she was praised for her exceptional dancing abilities.

Early Years

Sonalee has a military heritage. Her father, Manohar Kulkarni, spent thirty years in the Armed forces. Her father is a Deshastha Brahmin from Maharashtra, and her mother is a Punjabi; therefore, she was raised speaking both Punjabi and Marathi at home. She has an only sibling. She was born in a Pune military hospital and raised in an army cantonment. Sonalee attended Army school, Kendriya Vidyalaya, and Pune’s Ferguson College. Sonalee graduated from the Indira School of Communication in Pune with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. She has been dancing since she was five years old and learned Bharatnatyam in school.

Movie Career

Sonalee made her debut in the Marathi film industry with the 2006 film Gadhvacha Lagna, in which she had a minor role. Her performance in the film caught the attention of director Kedar Shinde, who cast her in the principal role of his 2007 film Bakula Namdeo Ghotale. Sonalee’s portrayal earned her a Zed Gaurav award despite the film’s lacklustre box office performance. She then appeared in films such as Aba Zindabad (2008) and Hai Kai Nai Kai (2009), but neither of these films were commercially successful nor critically acclaimed.

The January 2010 publication of Natarang marked a turning point in her career. Sonalee portrayed the folk theatre troupe’s main dancer in the film depicted the journey of a folk artist. Sonalee’s portrayal of Naina in the film Natarang, which was directed by Ravi Jadhav, garnered a great deal of praise. The entire state of Maharashtra was impressed by her dancing abilities, and she became known as the ‘Apsara Girl’ for her performance in the song ‘Apsara Ali’. Samudra, Sa Sasucha, Irada Pakka, Goshta Lagnanantarchi, and Kshanbhar Visharanti were among her 2010 releases. However, neither the box office nor the critics were affected by any of these films.

Ajintha, directed by Nitin Chandrakant Desai in 2012, was her next major role following the success of Natarang. She portrayed Paro, a tribal girl with whom a British artist falls in love during his trip to India to depict ancient monuments and scriptures. This film also underperformed at the box office, and neither did her performance.

Sonalee played a minor role in her second Hindi film, Singham Returns (2014), which was also deemed a box office success. Rama Madhav, her Marathi film directed by Mrinal Kulkarni and released in the same year, was well received by both the public and the critics.

  • Sonalee was born into a Maharashtrian-Punjab family in Khadki, a military cantonment located near Pune. Her father, Manohar Kulkarni, is a retired army physician who served the Army for 30 years. Her mother, Savinder, worked for COD on Dehu Road in Pune. Sonalee received her master’s degree in mass communication from the Indira School of Communication. Her younger sibling also operates an event company.
  • Sonalee is a trained Bharatanatyam performer. She began dancing at the age of five and is now one of the most proficient and established dancers in addition to being an actor.
