Significance
Shani Jayanti is an important holiday for Hindus. Lord Surya and Mother Swarna (Chhaya) gave birth to Lord Shani. According to the Hindu Scriptures, Shani Dev was a devoted follower of Lord Shiva. Lord Shani is regarded as the governor of Karma, which includes service and commerce. Wherever Shani Dev looks directly, it is regarded unlucky, and devotees should not look directly into his eyes. According to Hindu mythology, Ravana once abducted and imprisoned Lord Shani Dev. Ravana was liberated by Lord Hanuman. Since then, Lord Shani has expressed gratitude to Lord Hanuman and promised that devotees who worship him during the Shandi Saadhe Saati (seven and a half years), Shani Mahadasha (twelve years), and Dhaiya periods will never encounter any difficulty.
History
Shani Dev is the son of Lord Surya and Devi Chaaya, the shadow of Lord Surya’s consort, Devi Saranyu, according to Hindu texts. According to legend, Devi Sarnyu could not tolerate the heat and brightness of Lord Surya and therefore fled him. She departed for Penance, leaving her Shadow Chaaya in charge. As Shani Dev was born while Devi Chaaya was in severe penance and contemplating on Lord Shiva, he was born in darkness. Lord Shani’s dark complexion caused Lord Surya to doubt Chaaya’s chastity, so he insulted her
It is said that Lord Shani, enraged by Lord Surya’s insults, once cast his merciless gaze upon him, causing him to become burned and black in complexion. Lord Shiva then cured Lord Surya and revealed the truth about the births of Chaaya and Lord Shani. Also, Lord Shiva bestowed upon Lord Shani the authority and power to punish people for their wrongdoings and malicious deeds.
