Ten minutes his elder, he was delivered six weeks prematurely as opposed to his twin brother Rupert, who passed away in July 2020. Emma is his eldest sister as well.

Young was born into a prosperous middle-class family, with significant historical connections to the British government and military through his father’s paternal ancestry. Colonel Sir Aretas William Young, his great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, enlisted in the British Army at the age of seventeen in 1795. Prior to engaging in combat in the Peninsular War, Young would serve in Ireland and Egypt. Aretas was subsequently stationed in Trinidad, where he assumed leadership of the government until his transfer to Demerara, where he was bestowed with the esteemed title of Protector of Slaves. Three years after becoming the sixth Governor of Prince Edward Island in 1831, King William IV knighted Aretas.
