UWC Cayman Islands, the local, national committee of the global United World Colleges (UWC) movement, is accepting scholarship applications for 2023 through Wednesday, February 15.
Eligibility
Students must be Caymanian and 16 or 17 years old as of September 1 of the year of entrance to be eligible to apply through UWC Cayman Islands. While there are no minimum academic requirements, the International Baccalaureate is a difficult academic programme. Candidates are expected to possess at least seven ‘O’ level higher passes or the equivalent, or be on pace to do so.
Selection Process
The Selection Committee, which consists primarily of UWC alumni, evaluates all written applications. Academic excellence, extracurricular activity, community service, and commitment to the UWC purpose and values are given special consideration. Based on this, students are then selected for individual interviews.
Following individual interviews, the top applicants (typically 5–6) move on to a group stage where they discuss significant local and international issues and engage in team-building activities and group projects.
The scholar(s) for that year are then selected to represent the Cayman Islands in one of the UWC colleges located on four continents.
Families are asked to donate according to their means to the expense of a UWC education in order to ensure that selection is based only on merit and that this opportunity is available to as many deserving young people as possible. The national committee provides successful students with funding to cover all of their financial needs. Who finances the project?
Who funds the programme?
According to UWC Cayman Islands, scholarships are mostly sponsored by donations from local individuals, businesses, foundations, and other organisations, notably the Maples Group and the Aall Foundation, two long-standing major benefactors.
What happens after graduation?
Scholars stay devoted to the UWC’s goals of peace and justice after graduation and frequently attend prestigious colleges in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada to pursue a variety of educational and career routes.
