Department of Political Science: Recently, the Department of Political Science at Aligarh Muslim University hosted a lecture presided over by Professor Iqbalur Rehman. Professor Dewi Meyrasyawati of Universitas Airlangga in Surabaya, Indonesia, was the distinguished guest speaker at the event. She introduced her forthcoming book, “Hijab Practises of Muslim Women in Their Everyday Lives,” which is the result of extensive ethnographic investigation into the experiences of Hijab-wearing women in Indonesia and Surabaya. She challenged stereotypes by emphasising the harmonious coexistence of religiosity and fashion in their lives.
Dr. Sana Aziz, Assistant Professor, Department of History, delved into the political dimensions of the Hijab controversy, highlighting the influence of Islamophobia on the marginalisation of Muslim women, restricting their freedom of self-expression.
AMU faculty member receives fellowship in emergency medicine
Assistant Professor Dr. Tarushikha Sarvesh, representing the Advanced Centre for Women’s Studies, discussed theoretical perspectives on choice, agency, and dominance, and urged attendants to analyse critically the discourse influencing their lives.
Mr. Parvez Alam moderated an engaging discussion and question-and-answer session, which allowed students, faculty, and attendees to delve deeper into these urgent issues. Prof. Mohibul Haq thanked the speakers and the enthusiastic audience of over 300 students in his concluding remarks.
This talk emphasised the importance of confronting vital issues, fostering dialogue, and promoting inclusiveness. AMU continues to be committed to nurturing an atmosphere of intellectual inquiry and enlightenment.
