Annu Rani, a scholar at the department, has had her research published as a patent application, the initial step in obtaining a patent. Dr. Vishal Goyal, professor of the faculty, and Dr. Lalit Goyal, associate professor, DAV College, Jalandhar, supervise her doctoral research.
Prof. Goyal stated that the primary objective of the research was to discover a technical method for automatically translating news into sign language using an animated video system. Using this technology, he said, hearing-impaired individuals can have regular access to news content in sign language.
Annu Rani stated that she had also visited the Deaf and Blind School in Patiala in order to assess the infrastructure developed in this area. She stated that through this technology, hearing-impaired students and teachers were able to communicate. To validate this news telecast system, the required test sentences have been culled from multiple news channels. A total of 1112 news sentences were evaluated, and the accuracy of the English news telecast system was found to be 79.94%.
