Sir Syed Academy Seminar on G20 Summit: In the inaugural session of the two-day international seminar on ‘India’s G-20 Summit 2023: Opportunities and Challenges,’ organised by Sir Syed Academy, Aligarh, experts discussed India’s emerging role in international affairs and the global economy, the impact and benefits of digital revolution in the country, financial inclusion and women empowerment, and the active role of Indian leadership in addressing the climate and sustainability challenges, during India’s G-20 Presidency. They referred to the country’s G-20 Presidency as a historic occasion.
The Chief Guest of the event, Mr. Saurabh Garg IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, referred to the country’s digital revolution as a means of inclusion and noted that India’s G-20 Presidency has arrived at an opportune time. “This is occurring at a time when the country’s economy has risen to the fifth largest in the world and is swiftly moving to the fourth and, eventually, the third position. “The benefits are reaching a broad population,” he noted.

Mr. Garg asserted, “The nation’s expanding digital public infrastructure has empowered the people. Aadhaar verification is possible from anywhere, 10 million transactions were conducted through UPI last month, 2.5 lakh village Panchayats have optic fibre connections, Teledensity has increased by leaps and bounds, 72% of women and 80% of men in India have mobile phones, banking services have reached around 6 lakh villages through POS machines, and 50 crore bank accounts were opened under Jan Dhan Yojana.”
Mr. Garg also mentioned Mudra Yojana, ‘Bashini’, the voice-based translation facility that seeks to provide all Indians with easy access to digital services in their own language, the GeM portal for online public procurement, GigiLocker, etc. when highlighting the benefits of expanding digital infrastructure.
In addition to mentioning Swachh Bharat Yojana, Udan Scheme, etc., he stated that India has sent a very positive message to the world by emphasising the theme ‘One Planet, One Family, One Future’ via the G-20 Forum.
Mr. Rohit Bansal, Guest of Honour and Group Head of Communications for Reliance Industries, stated that climate change, sustainability, and women’s empowerment are crucial agenda items for the G-20 Summit, in which the country’s youth and women have a stake. To protect the environment, “sustainable lifestyles and habits should be adopted,” he emphasised.
Prof. Mohammad Gulrez, vice-chancellor of AMU, stated as he presided over the inaugural session that India has reached new milestones and provides effective leadership to the Global South, which presents both opportunities and challenges for our youth.

The influence of India in international affairs is growing. Indicators of India’s expanding influence include BRICS, ASEAN, QUAD, South Asian Grid, and the G-20 Forum. India will become the third largest economy in the world by 2025″, he said, emphasising the need to include minorities and women on the path to progress and development.
The Vice Chancellor also emphasised the importance of working on quantum computing, carbon emissions, and artificial intelligence, which are transforming our youth’s employment landscape.
Prof. Gulrez added, “India’s G-20 Presidency has created an atmosphere of excitement in the country, and AMU has also organised several programmes on various aspects of G-20, thereby raising the youth’s awareness and encouraging them to play a role in nation-building.”
Mr. Mohammad Imran IPS, Registrar of AMU, highlighted the themes of the G-20 Summit and the significance of this forum for India and the globe. He introduced the guest speakers as well.
The director of Sir Syed Academy, Professor Ali Mohammad Naqvi, delivered the welcome address. According to him, the G-20 is the largest forum in the world because it represents a significant population and the world’s largest economies. “This two-day international seminar affords researchers the opportunity to analyse and investigate various G-20 and India’s emerging role in international affairs,” he said. Prof. Naqvi also mentioned Sir Syed Academy’s publications.
Publication of 5 Books
On this occasion, five books published by Sir Syed Academy on topics related to the G-20 and the ninth volume of ‘Maqalat-e-Sir Syed’ were released.
Dr Mohammad Shahid, the Sir Syed Academy’s Deputy Director, proposed a vote of gratitude. Dr. Syed Hussain Haider presided over the meeting.
Later, during the academic session of the seminar, Prof. AR Kidwai, Prof. Saud Alam Qasmi, Prof. Obaidullah Fahd, Prof. Mujibbul Haque, etc. discussed ‘Sir Syed’s International Vision.
