OMG 2 Movie Review
Paresh Rawal portrays a clever “naastik” (atheist) character in the 2012 adaptation of “OMG” in such a convincing way that Krishna Vasudev Yadav from Gokul is driven to travel to Earth to correct him about his errors. The movie deftly criticises caste and religion while simultaneously making fun of religious opportunists from different backgrounds who prey on the naive. A major character casually brings up the Bible, the Gita, and
The fear of entering “OMG 2” in 2023 was present. India today is different and characterised by polarisation. Is it possible to discuss religion and religious people in a movie without it becoming didactic, preachy, or seeming majoritarian? The follow-up skillfully avoids the complexities of diversity by adopting an exceptionally liberal and progressive viewpoint. It accomplishes so expertly that we almost fail to notice the absence of other religions. The end product is a compelling film that raises issues about the lack of faith ignorant adults have in young people’s natural curiosity and candour as they investigate the mysteries of their body. The movie claims that there is no “gandaa kaam” or wrongdoing involved in this exploration and that it is entirely natural.
The movie employs a brilliant strategy of portraying its lead character, Kanti Sharan Mudgal, as a steadfast follower of Lord Shiva, a part that Pankaj Tripathi expertly inhabits. When his teenage son is bullied and mistreated by classmates at school, Kanti’s unwavering faith is put to the ultimate test. Even worse, after being accused of indulging in “vulgar acts,” his teachers fail him. OMG 2 is a success because the actors did an excellent job in their parts and because the plot and dialogue delivery offer a powerful message.
