Accolades and Public Reaction
The author of Vikram Sarabhai – A Life, Amrita Shah, criticised the series for its fictionalised events that distort history and its ignorant portrayal of India’s space and nuclear technology programmes. In addition, she argues that the representation of Sarabhai’s character lacks depth and nuance, which diminishes his significance.
Gita Aravamudan, a journalist, viewed the series as a reduction of renowned Indian scientists to Bollywood stereotypes that fabricated significant events and dates. ISRO: A Personal History, which she co-authored with her spouse Ramabhadran Aravamudan, recounts the true history of the Indian nuclear and space programmes. The fictionalised screen adaptation disregards scientific and technical aspects in favour of a more engaging story. However, nothing can be said about Season 2 of Rocket Boys.
The acting, direction, and screenplay were praised by critics and viewers. The Times of India awarded the performance a rating of 3.50 and referred to it as a “dazzling tribute to India’s scientific luminaries.” In addition, they mentioned that the show is captivating from beginning to conclusion.
Jim Sarbh and Ishwak Singh, along with the ensemble cast, do an outstanding job depicting the achievements of India’s scientific community in initiating its atomic and space programmes.
The Quint awarded Rocket Boys four and a half stars, with Shefali Deshpande stating that it is “the sort of material that the Academy Awards and BAFTA look for.” In addition, they stated that the excellent acting, storytelling, direction, and music, as well as the actual footage from the era coupled with corresponding audio, make this a winning show.
