Clean Your Aquarium Day is annually observed on June 18th. It promotes the enjoyment of maintaining aquatic life and encourages aquarium maintenance on a regular basis.
The holiday also raises awareness of the dangers of not regularly cleansing an aquarium, such as low oxygen levels and poor fish respiration.
The background of Clean Your Aquarium Day
Sumerians kept fish in artificial ponds 4,500 years ago, making them the earliest aquarists documented. However, humans in China did not begin breeding and raising carp in large ponds for food until 1 000 BCE. Later, in Japan, ornamental koi underwent selective breeding, and ornamental carp breeding was also perfected. In a similar manner, the ancient Romans kept fish for sustenance and entertainment and constructed ponds containing ocean-sourced freshwater.
In the mid-seventeenth century, residents in England kept goldfish in glass containers. However, aquarium maintenance did not become widespread until people realised the connection between oxygen, plants, and animals.
Before the 19th century, the term ‘aquarium’ was used in botany to refer to a container used to cultivate aquatic vegetation. The first public aquarium opened in London’s Regent’s Park in 1853, followed by establishments in Berlin, Naples, and Paris. Later, circus entrepreneur P.T. Barnum opened the first display aquarium at the American Museum in New York City; by 1928, there were 45 public or commercial aquariums around the globe. In 1938, Marineland launched the first oceanarium, which featured a community fish tank and trained dolphins.
