The background of Annoy Squidward Day

Stephen Hillenburg utilized his unpublished comic book “The Intertidal Zone,” which he wrote in 1989 after joining the Ocean Institute, to instruct visiting students about underwater life. A few of the characters from this comic book have since developed into SpongeBob SquarePants characters. He made numerous attempts to get the comic published, but publishing houses rejected his ideas.

Hillenburg then became a producer and creative director for Joe Murray, the man behind Rocko’s Modern Life. He created all of SpongeBob SquarePants’ characters during this time, and he also came up with the concept for the animated series. Hillenburg presented Nickelodeon executives with a SpongeBob SquarePants concept in 1997. Hillenburg and his group received cash and two weeks to write the first episode because Nickelodeon adored it.

Nickelodeon debuted the series in preview form on May 1, 1999, then in its official capacity on July 17, 1999. “Employee of the Month” was one of the episodes from the inaugural season, which debuted that same year. That episode featured Annoy Squidward Day for the first time as a joke.

“What day is it?” was posed to Squidward in the episode. Squidward, a figure prone to irritation, retorted, “Annoy Squidward Day.” After laughing at that reply, SpongeBob pointed to the calendar and stated, “No, silly, that is on the 15th.” Mr. Krabs presents the Employee of the Month Award on the fifteenth of each month. However, that didn’t stop enthusiasts from making February 15th an official holiday.
