Arborist Appreciation Day is annually observed on June 16. This is the time of year when we recognise the contributions of these unsung heroes of tree cultivation, maintenance, and administration to the logging economy. Being an arborist is a hazardous occupation due to the numerous hazards involved. It is fair to say that these men and women in horticulture and dendrology risk their lives daily. Today, we express our gratitude for their efforts. Find out how you can honour and support arborists across the nation.

The background of Arborist Appreciation Day

The history of arboriculture dates back to antiquity. The first trees in Mesopotamia and Egypt were cultivated in the Fertile Crescent. Due to migration and commerce, arboriculture techniques were refined and the profession spread throughout Europe. Due to the desirability of its delicious fruit, the date palm was the first plant to be cultivated in the Middle East. By 6000 BCE, Asia had begun to cultivate olive trees, which became so popular that they were traded to North Africa. The discovery of olive trees as a source of oil was crucial to the development of ancient Italian civilization.

During the Middle Ages, fruits became an important part of everyone’s diet, which led to the development of orchards. By that time, arboriculture had become a prominent local occupation for many. The cultivation of apple, pear, apricot, and plum trees by arborists bolstered the economies of European nations. The ‘Arbre’ (tree) section of “Diderot and D’alembert’s Encyclopédie” introduced more advanced arboricultural techniques in the 18th century. These techniques were rapidly adopted by arborists and contributed to the modern arboriculture techniques that are still in use today.

John Davey became the first arborist in 1873 after establishing hundreds of new trees throughout his Kent, Ohio, community. This practise of mass tree sowing is now known as ‘tree surgery’. By 1878, he had constructed a conservatory and published a monthly newsletter titled ‘Davey’s Floral and Landscape Educator’ to educate his community about the significance of tree planting and management.

There are approximately 8,444 arborists in the United States today. This occupation is recognised as one of the most hazardous and vital in the country.

ARBORIST APPRECIATION DAY ACTIVITIES

Increase exposure on social media

The social media is the best platform for raising awareness of causes or events swiftly and efficiently. You can distribute various articles on the significance of arboriculture and how it benefits the economy. Utilise the hashtag #ArboristAppreciationDay on an annual basis.

Take part in widespread tree sowing

While it is unlikely for regular citizens to perform the more dangerous aspects of an arborist’s profession, it is still possible to spend a day as a tree surgeon. Plan a community-wide planting event with your peers and family. It may consist of a modest shrub or a young tree. This activity increases awareness of the nature of an arborist’s responsibilities.

Prune your property

Backyard shrub trimming is one of the simplest ways to experience a small portion of what arborists do. A straightforward pruning and cutting will suffice. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to prune the plants and shrubbery on your property.

5 Interesting Facts Concerning Arborists and the Industry

92.6% of arborists in the United States are male, while 7.4% are women, according to statistics.

According to analysts, the annual death rate for arborists in the United States is 30 per 100,000 employees.

In the United States, certification as an arborist requires a degree in arboriculture and training in the field.

The services provided by arborists include pruning, sowing, treatment (pesticides, insecticides), and consulting.

The states with the highest annual arborist salaries are California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, North Dakota, and Rhode Island.
