Asom divas, or Assam Day, is a state holiday celebrated in the Indian state of Assam. It commemorates the arrival of the founder and first King of the Ahom kingdom in ancient Assam, which is now one of the country’s largest states with a population of over 30 million people. Did you know that Asom Divas is also known as Asom Day, Sukapha Divas, and several other names?
The History of Asom Divas
Asom Divas, also known as Asom Day or Sukapha Divas, commemorates the legacy of the first monarch of the Ahom kingdom in Assam and his arrival in the region in the early thirteenth century.
Chaolung Sukapha, a prince from the Tai state of Mong Mao near present-day Ruili in Yunnan, China, was forced to flee after the birth of a relative prevented him from ascending to his father’s throne. In 1228, after travelling for 13 years and through the Patkai mountains, he arrived in Namrup, in the southeast of the Indian state of Assam, and founded the Ahom dynasty.
The six-hundred-year reign of Sukapha as king of the Ahom kingdom in mediaeval Assam, during which he famously opposed other major forces such as the Mughals, is regarded as a golden episode in the history of Assam.
Due to the amiable relationship he formed with the tribal people residing in Assam at the time of his arrival, he is commonly referred to as the architect of ‘Bor Asom’ or ‘greater Assam’ He was recognised for being a strong, daring, and fearless leader who played a key role in integrating the many indigenous ethnic groups of Assam.
Asom Divas, the day dedicated to celebrating his legacy, shows the rich culture of Assam! The festival begins with local performers performing exquisite folk music and many indigenous dances, including Bagurumba, Bihu dance, and Bhortal dance. Following the award ceremony is a big procession prepared by the authorities.
