Embrace the future of transportation on Autonomous Vehicle Day, which is observed annually on May 31. Until recently, self-driving vehicles existed only in our imaginations (or on the silver screen). However, technology and science have combined to usher in a new era of travel, in which automobiles can travel without anyone touching the wheel. Follow the leading automobile journalist who provides sources and research to gain a deeper understanding of the latest autonomous inventions in order to remain current. Autonomous Vehicle Day demonstrates how close we are to a fundamental shift in the way the world travels. The day was created to honour the advancements in the autonomous vehicle industry and to recognise the potential benefits thereof.
The background of Autonomous Vehicle Day
The legend of flying carpets is the earliest example of human imagination imagining an autonomous vehicle. Multiple technological advancements over the years have contributed to the current state of autonomous vehicle development, such as the guidance system of torpedoes and the 1958 Chevrolet with self-steering coils. In fact, this voyage began nearly a century ago, when army engineer Francis Houdina attached a radio control system to a car so he could operate it via remote control. In order to demonstrate features such as turning, speed control, and horn use, he piloted this car through the streets of New York. Evidently, the driverless vehicle frightened bystanders, who began referring to it as the “phantom car.”
Obviously, autonomous vehicle innovation is not limited to automobiles alone. Local Motors created Olli, an automated, electric, cognitive conveyance capable of transporting up to 12 passengers. Also being developed are autonomous passenger vehicles, autonomous buses, and autonomous commercial lorries. According to reports, the Department of Defence is also developing autonomous military vehicles.
In 2017, Autonomous Vehicle Day was founded by the entrepreneurial ecosystem platform Emerging Prairie and the American technology talk show presenter Marlo Anderson.
