Ruth was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1895. His given name was originally George Herman Ruth Jr. Before settling down as a cashier at a family-owned grocery store and saloon, his father held a variety of positions. According to reports, after a particularly violent incident at the bar, the authorities immediately removed Ruth from his parents’ custody. He attended a Catholic orphanage where he learned many talents, including carpentry and sewing, in addition to academics.
