The 7th of May is Beaufort Scale Day, and we’re here to show you how to celebrate. Do you realise that the Beaufort Scale has existed for more than a century? Sir Francis Beaufort, an officer in the Royal British Navy, devised the Beaufort scale. Beaufort devised a simple scale with a point system ranging from 0 to 12 that was used to quantify the force of the wind. Beaufort Scale Day was created to celebrate Sir Francis Beaufort’s invention of the Beaufort Scale, which is extensively utilised in naval applications.
The Background of Beaufort Scale Day
In 1774, Sir Francis Beaufort was born in Flower Hill, County Meath, Ireland. It was Beaufort’s desire to create accurate marine charts because he had been involved in an accident on the sea caused by inaccurate charts. Beaufort began his naval career with the British East India Company. In 1800, while serving aboard H.M.S. Phaeton. Beaufort was designated captain of the Royal British Navy in 1810. Between 1811 and 1812, Beaufort sailed and explored Anatolia. Beaufort referred to Anatolia as Karmania, a Turkish region with ancient remnants. It is the location of Hadrian’s Gate. Beaufort published the book “Karamania; or a brief description of the South Coast of Asia Minor, and the Remains of Antiquity” in 1817.
About 2,000 navigational charts covering all seas were available at Beaufort. He promoted the application of tide tables in British waters. In 1833, he published the first Admiralty Tide Tablets. Beaufort developed the Beaufort Scale to quantify wind speed using a simple point system. Zero on the scale indicated tranquil weather, while 12 indicated a hurricane. It required no special equipment.
The death of Beaufort occurred on December 17, 1857. He was laid to rest in Hackney, London. Beaufort Scale Day was established to recognise Francis Beaufort’s contribution to developing accurate charts for the seven seas and his invention of the Beaufort scale. People commemorate the day by learning more about the inventor’s inventions and works.
