Every year on June 25, Croatia celebrates its independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in remembrance of the day the country declared its intention to do so. Did you know that Croatia became an independent nation in 1991 after secession from Yugoslavia? Croatia is one of the world’s youngest independent nations. In Croatia, Croatia Independence Day is known as Dan neovisnosti. Previously, it was observed on October 8, which is now known as the Day of the Croatian Parliament. Independence Day in Croatia, which was once a national public holiday, is now solely a memorial. In 2002, Croatian Independence Day was observed for the first time.
The background of Croatia Independence Day
Sections of what is now Croatia were assimilated into the Roman Empire in 9 A.D., marking the beginning of Croatia’s significant history. The residence of Diocletian, the first Roman Emperor from the region, was constructed in Split. After his abdication in 305 A.D., this palace became his retirement home and a refuge for Julius Nepos, the last de jure Western Roman Emperor, who fled Italy in the fifth century. The arrival of Croats in the Roman province of Dalmatia occurred between the sixth and ninth centuries. They subsequently established the Duchy of Croatia, which encompassed portions of contemporary Croatia.
Between the seventh and ninth centuries, the Croats converted to Christianity, and on June 7, 879, Pope John VIII recognised Duke Branimir as Croatia’s first sovereign. In 925, Tomislav became the first king of Croatia, ushering in the country’s golden period. This golden era ended in 1102 when the Hungarian empire absorbed Croatia. Although it retained its autonomy, the Hungarian king appointed Ban as the leader of Croatia.
In 1918, following World War I, Croatia proclaimed its independence and joined the newly founded States of Slovenes, Croats, and Serbs. They became the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes on December 4, 1918. Croatia lost its independence in 1921, when a new constitution that legally binds the monarchy as a unified state took effect. King Alexander changed the name of the monarchy to Yugoslavia in 1931. After World War II, Croatia proclaimed independence on June 25, 1991. On October 8, 1991, the declaration entered into force. However, this resulted in conflict between the Croats and the Serbs. The conflict lasted until August 1995, with Croatia emerging victorious.
In 2002, Ivica Racan’s government transferred the Croatian Independence Day to October 8 and renamed June 25 Statehood Day. However, on November 14, 2019, the Croatian Parliament changed the date of Croatian Independence Day back to June 25 and made October 8 Croatian Parliament Day.
