Couples competed for a cash grand reward by moving continuously for hundreds of hours. As the competition lasted a couple of months back then, competitors went to considerable lengths to win. Until the 1930s, dance marathons served as a buffering mechanism for Americans during the Great Depression. People viewed them as a means of diversion and a source of entertainment during the most dire of circumstances. In addition to dancers, a round-the-clock motion competition is comprised of seasoned professionals, amateurs, and marathon runners. The popularity of these events rapidly permeated the American cultural zeitgeist, and they were soon celebrated in cities including Seattle, Wenatchee, Bellingham, and Spokane.
