Fill Our Staplers Day is celebrated annually during the second full week of March and on an unspecified date in November. It is a day in which we can all work together to resolve a small but very real problem. Staplers are an essential work implement for the majority of us. Only when they are full can they organise our files and documents and hold things together, such as frames and general office aids, to create a more efficient working environment. The Dull Men’s Club therefore created a day to remind people that full staplers save time and help businesses operate efficiently.
The background of Fill Our Staplers Day
Staplers have existed for a very long time. In the 18th century, an unknown craftsman is said to have devised the first stapler for King Louis XV of France to help him keep his decrees and documents together. Prior to that time, people used wax made from alloys and metals to bind their documents.
As paper use increased in the 19th century, so did the need to organise files and documents. People could not afford the costly devices of the nobility, so for a brief time they used a paper fastener invented by Novelty Manufacturing, which was inefficient because it did not adhere to the paper as well as the staple. A simple binder was used to bond the paper together. Infamous inventor George W. McGill garnered notoriety in 1866 for his patented brass paper fasteners. In 1867, he demonstrated his invention, a staple press capable of driving fasteners through paper. Throughout the years, he faced a handful of competitors on occasion. In 1879, McGill won the stapler war by producing and patenting the McGill Single-Stroke Staple Press, which was a tremendous success despite weighing 2.5 pounds and requiring a great deal of strength to operate.
Later, numerous clipless machines and other devices appeared on the market. In 1923, a desk stapler was manufactured. Since 1937, when Swingline created an easy-to-load stapler with a row of staple needles, the design of staples has remained relatively unchanged.
