Vajiralongkorn was born in the Amphorn Sathan Residential Hall of the Dusit Palace in Bangkok on July 28, 1952. King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit have no other children. His father appointed him reigning prince at age 20. His father died on October 13, 2016, so he was anticipated to ascend to the throne of Thailand. However, he requested mourning time before ascending the throne.

On the evening of December 1, 2016, he acceded to the monarchy. His coronation occurred between May 4 and May 6, 2019. The Thai government retroactively declared his tenure to have begun on October 13, 2016, following the passing of his father, despite the fact that his coronation had occurred several months earlier. He is also referred to as RAMA X, the tenth king of the Chakri dynasty. Vajiralongkorn, who was 64 when he accepted the throne, was the oldest Thai monarch to accede to the throne.
