What is Inauguration Day?

Inauguration Day is the day when the President of the United States is sworn into office. It is also the first day of the president’s four-year term. The date of Inauguration Day is January 20.

Inauguration Day was established by the Constitution of the United States. The first Inauguration Day was on April 30, 1789, when George Washington became the first president of the United States.

Every four years, on January 20th, the President of the United States is sworn into office in a ceremony called an inauguration. The President takes the Oath of Office, which is given in Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 of the Constitution. This oath states that the President will faithfully execute their duties as president and will to the best of their ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.

After taking this oath, they deliver an inaugural address to officially start their term as President. Many presidents have used this opportunity to share their vision for America with the American people.

The History of Inauguration Day

Inauguration Day in the United States falls on January 20th. It is the day when the President of the United States is sworn into office. The first Inauguration Day was on April 30th, 1789, when George Washington became the first U.S. President. He was sworn in at Federal Hall in New York City.

Inauguration Day was moved to January 20th in 1937. Prior to that, it had been held on March 4th. The 20th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution explains the change: “The terms of the President and Vice President shall end at noon on the 20th day of January, and the terms of Senators and Representatives at noon on the 3d day of January, of the years in which such terms would have ended if this article had not been ratified; and the terms of their successors shall then begin.”

Since 1937, all Inauguration Days have fallen on a Monday. If January 20th falls on a Sunday, as it did in 2013, then the private swearing-in ceremony is held on that day and the public ceremony is held on Monday, January 21st.

There have been 57 presidential inaugurations as of 2017. The most recent one was for Donald Trump, who became president on January 20th, 2017.

The Inauguration Ceremony

Inauguration Day for the President of the United States is a day of solemn ceremony and celebration, marking both the peaceful transfer of power from one president to the next and the start of a new four-year term. The inauguration ceremony itself is held on January 20th at the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., and typically includes a swearing-in ceremony, musical performances, and speeches from both the outgoing and incoming presidents. Inauguration Day is a federal holiday in the United States, meaning many Americans have the day off work or school to watch the proceedings on television or attend in person.

While Inauguration Day is certainly a time to celebrate democracy in action, it also serves as a reminder of the weighty responsibilities that come with being the leader of the free world. For those who are sworn into office on this day, it is a chance to reflect on their own personal journey to this moment – and to pledge their commitment to meeting the challenges ahead.
