International Fanny Pack Day is observed annually on the second Saturday of March. Though the name may suggest it is a day to celebrate only fanny packs, the day has a much deeper significance. Fanny packs, a 1980s trend, are tiny pouches worn around the waist for carrying small items such as cell phones, cash, and other items too small for large bags. Whether you name it a waist bag, a belly bag, a belt bag, a moon bag, or even a bum bag, this accessory is undeniably useful. The actual history behind International Fanny Pack Day makes it even more special.
The background of International Fanny Pack Day
International Fanny Pack Day was created by Nick Yates from Portland, Oregon in 2007. Yates encountered a destitute man on his way home from a party, and out of compassion, he gave the man the fruitcake in his fanny pack. Nick Yates was inspired by this experience to launch a charitable food drive for the impoverished and disadvantaged. This is the origin of International Fanny Pouch Day.
Despite the fact that the first observance of the holiday occurred on the first Saturday of March, subsequent celebrations after 2008 have been held on the second Saturday of March.
Since the 1980s, both men and women have been seen wearing waist vests. It was safe to transport valuables without fear of theft because the purse is carried in front of the body, where it can be adequately protected. In the 1990s, they were the height of fashion, but in the 2000s, they fell out of favour.
Nonetheless, in 2012, a number of designers attempted to revive the trend by offering new designs, some of which cost as much as $1,995. They were also known as hands-free purses or belted satchels. In 2018, A-list celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Jaden Smith, and Rihanna were spotted carrying over $1,000 fanny packs. Designers such as Prada, Gucci, and Louis Vuitton were the driving force behind this revival.
Although fanny packs are typically worn in front of the body, the name suggests that some individuals wore them behind their buttocks. A fanny pack is also referred to as a waist bag, belt bag, moon bag, belly bag, and buttock bag. They can also be worn with the shoulders crossed.
