International Quirkyalone Day is observed annually on February 14 as an alternative to Valentine’s Day. It’s not anti-romantic, so don’t worry. In fact, International Quirkyalone Day celebrates the ideal type of romance: one that encourages uniqueness. You can celebrate International Quirkyalone Day whether you are happily single, in a solid partners-for-life relationship, or in one of those “it’s complicated” relationships. The day can be observed by anyone who believes they can be complete on their own, is at ease being alone, and values relationships that allow freedom. International Quirkyalone Day is designed for those who are at ease with solitude, whether they are single or in a relationship.
HISTORY OF INTERNATIONAL QUIRKYALONE DAY
Sasha Cagen, author of “Quirkyalone: A Manifesto for Uncompromising Romantics,” conceived of International Quirkyalone Day in 2003. Cagen coined the distinctive term “Quirkyalone.” She defined a quirkyalone as “a person who can feel whole or aspires to feel whole while being single and therefore prefers to wait for the right person to come along rather than date randomly: relishing equal doses of solitude and friendship; drawn to freedom and possibility.” It is a philosophy of individual happiness.
Cagen believed that Valentine’s Day had become too commercialised, resulting in a watered-down version of romance that excluded people. This is the reason why she created Quirkyalone Day, a day of romance for everyone.
Sasha was at a New Year’s Eve party and was unable to find anyone to fulfil the tradition of kissing on the first day of the year. She had a realisation when she realised she was not alone.
International Quirkyalone Day celebrates the kind of romance that does not require a partner to be complete. It demonstrates that there are various forms of love that we frequently overlook in our pursuit of a “other half.” The day proclaims there is no unique “other half.” Rather, individuals are complete on their own. This way, romance is not about two unfinished souls aimlessly wandering through life with the intention of finding each other. Rather, it is about a complete individual who finds other complete individuals to celebrate life with.
According to the official Facebook page for Quirkyalone, a quirkyalone is “a person who enjoys being single (or spending time alone) and therefore prefers to wait for the right person to come along as opposed to dating for the sake of dating.” Another definition provided by the same source describes it as “a person who can feel whole (or aspires to feel whole) being single and therefore prefers to wait for the right person to come along as opposed to dating randomly; relishing equal doses of solitude and friendship; attracted to freedom and possibility.”
According to the holiday’s themes, International Quirkyalone Day is neither anti-valentine nor anti-love. Instead, it emphasises self-worth and the fact that it is not contingent on a romantic partner. Regardless of one’s romantic status, self-love and self-confidence must come first.
The day was created to remind singles that they are fine on their own and that there are other forms of love besides romantic love. For partnered individuals (‘quirkytogethers’), the day serves as a reminder that even in a relationship, you are a unique individual with value.
