The History of We Are Not Broken Day

According to authors Gilliland and James, a “crisis” is the impression of an incident or circumstance as an unacceptable difficulty that exceeds one’s coping abilities. This incident might present itself in numerous ways, but the crisis arises from the individual’s emotional response to the event or circumstance. If this crisis becomes too overpowering for the individual, he or she may behave in a pathological manner. Some extreme reactions are characterised by both suicidal and homicidal intentions. A person’s cognitive, emotive, and behavioural states may be severely compromised by the crisis itself.

Those in a state of crisis have typically experienced psychological trauma. Trauma renders a person powerless and helpless due to the overwhelming force of the precipitating event. Typically, the traumatic experience that precipitates the crisis affects the victim’s mentality. This traumatic occurrence or circumstance frequently damages a person’s sense of control, connection, and significance. The individual’s reaction to this trauma is comparable to how the body reacts to stress. Psychological trauma is a state of extreme discomfort that disrupts a person’s equilibrium, causing psychological disequilibrium as a result of the failure of the individual’s typical coping strategies to respond to the psychological trauma. This response will cause the individual to experience severe distress and functional impairment.

Varying degrees of functional impairment can be caused by trauma, ranging from minor to severe. Without any type of respite from the crisis, the individual’s distress may increase and his or her conduct may become more erratic. This is why people with these diseases are referred to be “broken.” However, a group named We Are Not Broken has been founded to address these myths, resulting in the 2019 establishment of International We Are Not Broken Day.

How to Celebrate We Are Not Broken Day

We Are Not Broken Day is celebrated annually on January 17. The day was created to spread awareness and promote positivity towards those who have been affected by mental illness. There are many ways to celebrate We Are Not Broken Day, but here are a few ideas to get you started:
