The background of James Ronald Webster Day
James Ronald Webster Day is a local holiday celebrated annually on March 2 in Anguilla. When March 2 falls on a weekend, many people will have an extra day off the following Monday. Father of the Nation James Ronald Webster was born on March 2, 1926. He grew up in Anguilla with 15 other siblings before moving to Saint Martin at age 17 to work. He laboured diligently for nearly three decades on a dairy farm and factory. The childless proprietor and his wife treated him as a son and left him their entire estate upon their deaths.
In 1960, when he returned to Anguilla, he discovered that the island was still a century behind its neighbours and that its people were suffering. He was determined to take action with the money he inherited. In 1966, he communicated with Robert Bradshaw, who resided in Saint Kitts, formerly known as Saint Christopher. Webster offered to fund the construction of a power plant and road improvements in Anguilla. After being granted a licence to operate a power plant, Webster twice attempted to meet with Bradshaw but was denied.
At the time, Anguilla, along with Saint Kitts and Nevis, was a member of a federation. Webster was so enraged by the federation’s treatment of Anguilla that he played a leading role in the Anguilla Revolution and the federation’s dissolution. He served as the island’s chief minister from February 1976 to February 1977 and from May 1980 to March 1984. In 2010, the government of Anguilla recognised Webster’s birthday as a public holiday in recognition of his leadership in the island’s separation from the Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla federation. Webster passed away on December 6, 2016, at the age of 90.
