The History of Mathematics Day

December 22 is celebrated as Mathematics Day in India in recognition of the birth anniversary of the great Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. The Indian Mathematical Society (IMS) organises various events to mark the occasion.

Ramanujan was born on December 22, 1887, in Erode, Tamil Nadu. He showed an early interest in mathematics and developed his own methods to solve mathematical problems. After completing his studies at the University of Madras, he began working on his own research.

In 1913, Ramanujan was invited to England by G. H. Hardy, a leading mathematician at the time. Hardy recognised Ramanujan’s genius and they worked together on many mathematical problems. Ramanujan made significant contributions to number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.

Ramanujan returned to India in 1919 and died just three years later at the age of 32. Despite his short life, he made a lasting impact on mathematics and his work continues to be studied today.

The Indian Mathematical Society was founded in 1936 with Ramanujan as its first president. Mathematics Day is a way of celebrating his life and work and promoting interest in mathematics among students in India.
