HISTORY OF NATIONAL BIBLE DAY
Former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos established the inaugural National Bible Day in 1982. He designated the first Sunday of Advent and the last week of November as National Bible Sunday and National Bible Week, respectively, each year.
In 1986, President Corazon Aquino shifted the National Bible Day to January. He moved National Bible Week to January of each year. This decree was reaffirmed by President Fidel Ramos, who emphasised that the nation should adopt the practise of reading the “Bible,” whose teachings provide the nation the strength to live with hope during tough times.
On January 5, 2017, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte signed into law National Bible Day. He designated the final Monday of January as the official date for National Bible Day celebrations.
Senator Manny Pacquiao, the primary architect and sponsor of the law, lobbied for National Bible Day on February 5, 2018. In accordance with Republic Act 11163, the president signed it into law on December 20, 2018.
Observance of the “Bible” in the Philippines is a constitutionally protected Christian custom that continues to have widespread support. “It is the policy of the state to aid and foster the development of the moral character and spiritual foundation of the Filipino people,” declares the Constitution.
