National Black Girl Magic Day 2023: The 15th of February is annually recognised as National Black Girl Magic Day in the United States. This day honours the beauty, strength, and perseverance of Black women. The day also increases awareness of the difficulties Black women experience, particularly discriminatory or racist ones. Activists examine the effects of business, medical, cultural, and social factors in America on Black women. National Black Girl Magic Day aims to build a future in which every Black girl and woman receives equal representation to her White counterparts through the power of example. Wishing everyone a happy National Black Girl Magic Day!
HISTORY OF NATIONAL BLACK GIRL MAGIC DAY
National Black Girl Power Day occurs on February 15. While Black women should be honoured on a daily basis, a specific day of recognition serves as a reminder of how exceptional Black women are. Black Girl Magic was founded by CaShawn Thompson in 2013 when she began the #BlackGirlsAreMagical initiative. Since then, the name of the campaign has been abbreviated and popularised as #BlackGirlMagic. The campaign has found both male and female supporters. CaShawn mentioned civil rights activist and warrior Gloria Richardson as one of the inspirations for the word.
The image of Richardson pushing aside a bayonet during a rally in Maryland has become synonymous with her unwavering commitment to the civil rights movement. This photograph inspired CaShawn to launch her own women-led revolution, which resulted in the #BlackGirlMagic campaign. She relied primarily on internet activism to commemorate Black women and their history in a distinctive manner.
National Black Girl Magic Day is significant because it recognises the ways in which Black women create space for themselves, celebrate themselves, and connect. The hashtags used in the digital movement assist Black women in forming networks and connecting with one another. Black women use hashtags such as #beingablackgirlislit, #blackgirlmagic, and #melaninpopping to form these groups and find ways to support each other offline as well. National Black Girl Magic Day is the day to unabashedly honour every Black woman and her extraordinary existence. Black women are, after all, important to American society.
